“Color is what gives jewels their worth. They light up and enhance the face,” said Christian Dior in 1956, adding, “Nothing is more elegant than a black skirt and sweater worn with a sparkling, multi-stoned necklace.” Dior Fine Jewelry’s artistic director, Victoire de Castellane, has captured Dior’s fascination with the interplay between gemstones and fashion in her flamboyant yet stylish creations, which brim with bouquets of stones. She meticulously selects the gems most appropriate to her concepts much as a fashion designer chooses the fabrics best suited to a particular garment—and, as with a couturier, for de Castellane, color always trumps cost. Her latest collections exhibit an unrestrained exuberance, which she achieves through unlikely combinations of colors that harmonize when assembled into such carefully constructed objects as these rings and earrings of emeralds, tourmalines, sapphires, garnets, and diamonds.
