Best of the Best 2005: Diamonds

“This stone is a true showstopper,” says designer Michael Beaudry, who recently secured the rights to use an innovative new diamond cut called the Flame in his designs, including this recently completed ring. In the predominantly traditional diamond world, the Flame stands apart as an inventive yet approachable stone.

The Flame’s distinctive flared shape requires an uncommon long and narrow rough diamond to create the elongated form with curved edges. The ring’s 6.13-carat stone and its 5-carat Flame sister stone were cut from a 28-carat rough diamond. “It could take a few years to find another piece of rough large enough and suitable to cut a Flame diamond of this size,” says Beaudry, a master diamond cutter. A team of four Israeli master cutters spent about three months using time-honored methods and a state-of-the-art laser-cutting machine to hone the center stone for the eye-catching platinum ring, which was set with fancy pink and white diamonds in Beaudry’s Los Angeles workshop.
