In September, at his Salt Lake City shop, Daniel Paillasseur will display the black diamond for which he named his jewelry brand, Korloff (www.korloff.fr). Paillasseur had viewed the then-110-carat stone several years before founding his company in 1978 in Lyon, France. He eventually acquired the diamond, which is thought to have belonged to the Korloff Sapojnikoff family of Russian nobles, and refashioned it into an 88-carat stone. Paillasseur is also the creator of the Korloff Cut, a patented diamond design with 41 facets on the crown (the top half) and 24 facets on the pavilion (the lower half). The Korloff Diamond will be displayed along with the company’s new Fantasme collection of jewelry and watches. If not for the displays of clothes and accessories, the new Barneys New York (www.barneys.com), at NorthPark Center in Dallas, could be mistaken for an art museum. The interior design of the 88,000-square-foot space includes a biomorphic steel sculpture by longtime Barneys collaborator John-Paul Philippe, abstract murals, sculptures, and ceramic pieces. You will not find a docent at the store, but a concierge is on hand to arrange car service, make restaurant reservations, or obtain theater tickets.
