Mattia Cielo Debuts Carbon-Fiber Vulcano Jewelry

Creativity erupts from the Italian jeweler’s latest experimental collection…

The latest innovation from the Italian jeweler Mattia Cielo, known for using unorthodox materials combined with 18-karat gold in striking designs, is the Vulcano collection, which includes pieces made with carbon fiber. The lightweight material, which is widely used in the aerospace and automotive industries, allows for large, sculptural, designs that are not too heavy. The result is modern, edgy, textured black jewelry accented with diamonds and gold.

With a knack for adopting unique materials in jewelry, Mattia Cielo researched and experimented with the lightweight, highly resilient material, ultimately developing a new technology of manipulating carbon fiber specifically for the collection. The pieces are made through a process of layering sheets of structural carbon atop one another and placing the resulting material into resin-lined molds. When formed, the pieces are polished with a surface treatment for a lustrous finish or left as is for an edgier, matte look. The Vulcano collection also includes the IGold line, which features 18-karat rose gold and jewels implemented in such a way as to minimize the weight of the pieces. The Vulcano collection, priced from $7,000 to $48,000, includes rings, bangles, and necklaces, as well as chains that can be worn around the neck or as bracelets. (www.mattiacielo.com)
