The term cocktail ring was coined in the United States in the 1920s, during Prohibition, when women dressed up flamboyantly to visit underground clubs and venues and illicitly imbibe. In flaunting their forbidden drinks, a large ring with a big gemstone became all the rage, and the cocktail ring was born.
