How to Dress for a Polo Match, According to Polo Star Nacho Figueras

When in doubt, take your cues from the game's most swaggering player.

It’s always polo season somewhere, whether you’re catching the celeb-laden Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic in Los Angeles—which returns next month after a Covid hiatus!—a Sentebale charity match at the Aspen Valley Polo Club alongside Prince Harry, or just a casual Saturday game at Newport Polo in Rhode Island. Dressing for such a well-heeled sport can prove challenging. How formal? How casual? What about standing in the sun all day? What shoes for stomping the divots at half-time? So, for a little expert insight, we enlisted none other than legendary Argentine polo player, model and all-around mensch, Nacho Figueras.

“The beauty of polo is that you don’t have to be fancy to attend or even play,” Figueras tells us. He explains that not all matches are created equal—and that at any given polo game, you’re likely to see everything from sport coats to T-shirts, so the solution is to go in “whatever you feel comfortable with.” That being said, the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic, of which Figueras has long been an ambassador, skews a little more playful. “[That one] definitely inspires you to dress up a bit more, since the setup is super cool and elevated,” he says.

Here, we’ve pulled together nine versatile pieces sure to strike the right note next time you’re at a polo match—so you can enjoy the sport of kings knowing that you look the part.
