Arnold & Son Adapts English Elements of the Past in New Timepieces

The aesthetic codes of Arnold & Son’s HMS1 Royal Blue can be traced directly to a pocket watch built by the 18th-century English watchmaker John Arnold. Although Arnold’s contributions to watchmaking rest primarily in his pursuit of accurate chronometers for shipboard navigation, this particular pocket watch, housed in gold and vibrant blue enamel, represented a stylistic shift from the overly embellished pieces of the previous era. The new HMS1 Royal Blue ($16,860) captures the classical look in rose gold with a lacquered blue dial over a guilloche base, an approximation of the flinqué enamel style that is the hallmark of so many truly valuable vintage watches.
