BEST of the BEST 2014 | Style | Men’s Watches | Design: Cartier Rotonde de Cartier Double Mystery Tourbillon

“This is a watch we had planned for a long time,” says Carole Forestier-Kasapi, who oversees movement development for Cartier. Unlike many of her recent inventions, the new Rotonde de Cartier Double Mystery Tourbillon ($185,000) does not rely on complex and unorthodox mechanics to capture the attention of collectors. Instead, arresting design and a connection to some of the company’s most celebrated creations are garnering notice for this timepiece. The tourbillon, which both rotates and orbits on transparent slices of sapphire, recalls the mystery clocks Cartier made famous in the early 20th century, and the dial, drawn from Cartier’s recent concept watches, also riffs on the geometry of the art deco period; but its more aggressive lines are pure 21st century—and a worthy update to the brand’s storied horological history.
