Excellence Revisited: Motor Trend

While refurbishing stopwatches and dashboard rally timers in vintage sports cars, Manchester-trained watchmaker Ian Walsh, founder of IWI (Ian Walsh International) Watches, was impressed by their straightforward and sensible British design. With IWI (+44.1254.760974, www.iwiwatches.com), he applies the same nuts-and-bolts styling to wristwatches such as the B1 (left). Starting with a 2T-upgraded Swiss ETA 2824 movement, Walsh hand-assembles his three-hand automatics in the only watchmaking operation ever to grace the old industrial town of Darwen, in the heart of England’s cotton-milling Lancashire region. The thick, stainless steel cases (in matte, polished, or black finishes) are also made in England, individually machined, and bound together with Torx bolts, then numbered from one to 500. Walsh evokes the automotive roots of his watches with bold dials and large onion-style winders. He plans to make the association more than aesthetic by building a dashboard-mounted model that can rally with a matching stopwatch.
