The company that built a watch with the world’s largest tourbillon carriage (the Giga Tourbillon) recently released a model with what might be the fastest-rotating carriage. The $242,300 Franck Muller Thunderbolt Tourbillon (www.franckmuller.com) has a carriage that rotates once every 5 seconds; conventional tourbillons turn once a minute. The higher-speed spinning promises to more effectively mitigate the effect of gravity on the movement’s timekeeping element. Despite all the energy that the tourbillon requires, four spring barrels and a low-friction ceramic bearing system for the carriage enable a power reserve of 60 hours.
