IWC established its bona fides as a maker of modern mechanical watches in the 1980s with its original Da Vinci, which offered the then-novel mix of a chronograph and a perpetual calendar. The firm’s second Da Vinci is even more impressive. The IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month (www.iwc.com) incorporates a new case and a column-wheel chronograph movement, as well as a new perpetual-calendar mechanism with a hands-free display; four digits, each seen through its own aperture, show the days and months more clearly than traditional perpetual calendars. The feature required IWC to develop a power-conservation system that drives the displays and instantly changes the date.
