IWC’s New Carbon-Fiber Performance Ethic

Given its racy good looks and ease of construction, it is small wonder that carbon fiber has been used in more varied ways in watches over the last two decades than any other material. But unlike the vast majority of timepieces that use prefabricated sections of the composite for purely aesthetic reasons, IWC’s new Ingenieur Automatic Carbon Performance ($26,400) possesses a case in carbon fiber that is laid up by hand to create its curves and lines. The technique is meant to reflect the construction of Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 car bodies, the new inspiration for the company’s Ingenieur watches. The new carbon-fiber watches will be sold exclusively at IWC boutiques. (800.432.9330, www.iwc.com)
