Panerai’s Most Unconventional Watch Design

The newest Lo Scienziato Luminor may be unique, but it adheres to Panerai’s strict design codes…

The Panerai Lo Scienziato Luminor 1950 Tourbillon GMT Titanio ($143,000, panerai.com) features both a tourbillon and a movement-revealing dial—an unconventional design for Panerai—but still adheres to the Florence-based, Swiss-made brand’s strict design codes. The watchmaker’s seldom-used in-house tourbillon movement has its own idiosyncrasies, such as a high-speed cage that rotates horizontally like a rotisserie, and finishing that forsakes the usual Swiss decorative touches in favor of a subtle, no-nonsense grain. This mix of Italian design and Swiss construction has yielded a complicated watch with a refreshingly different flavor.
