IWC Schaffhausen adds to its annual Calendar collection with the Portugieser.
With the release of its Portugieser Annual Calendar wristwatch, IWC Schaffhausen will round out its collection of calendar watches. As its name indicates, the annual calendar requires adjustment just once a year, at the end of February. Unlike examples from other manufacturers, however, the Portugieser Annual Calendar (price available upon request) is adjusted through the crown—a distinguishing feature from IWC. The timepiece also uses a cam-and-lever system similar to the one the company developed in 2007 for the Digital Date-Month.
Curiously, IWC opted to use the U.S. date format of month followed by day rather than the reverse arrangement, which is favored in Europe and Asia. “I’d like to say we did it because our company had an American founder,” says Stefan Ihnen, IWC’s director of research and development. “But in reality, it was a little easier to accomplish from a technical standpoint.”
