Bona-fide firsts in watchmaking don’t come along very often, which is why A. Lange & Söhne’s Triple Split release is remarkable. The revered German watchmaker has created the first-ever chronograph that allows its wearer to time three intervals simultaneously for as long as 12 hours. To put that technical feat into perspective, the A. Lange & Söhne Double Split—which was also a world first—could time intervals only up to 30 minutes, which was an improvement from a typical chronograph that times intervals up to 60 seconds. The change from the Double Split to the new Triple Split means the difference between timing short jogs and measuring two opponents in a Formula 1 race.

Creating the Triple Split called for the design of an entirely new movement—the caliber L132.1, which consists of 567 parts. The size of the movement means that the watch itself is formidable with a 43.2-mm-diameter case that’s 15.6 mm thick. Limited to just 100 pieces in white gold at $147,000, this will be a statement piece in more ways than one.
