The undulating field of diamonds on the dial of Cartier’s Ballon Bleu Serti Vibrant (limited to 20 pieces) makes a strong first impression—perhaps one similar to that created by Chopard’s spinning Happy Diamonds when they debuted in the 1970s. Cartier achieves this visual effect with a setting inspired by the old and obscure en tremblant jewelry setting, in which diamonds would be mounted, appropriately enough, on watch springs to give them sparkle-enhancing motion. Using 123 matched and mounted stones, Cartier has managed to create a sense of uniform motion that makes for an extremely modern jewelry watch with a technical air. (cartier.us)
