Sotheby’s Unearths Watches of Unusual Provenance

Surprise is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the vintage watch market. Sotheby’s will serve up a generous helping of it in a June 14 sale in New York, which will feature never-before-seen timepieces from the collection of Reginald H. Fullerton Jr. Fullerton was the grandson of Henry Graves Jr., whom watch aficionados will recognize as one of the most important collectors of the 20th century. A super-complicated pocket watch that Graves commissioned from Patek Philippe remains the single most expensive timepiece ever purchased at auction. Thirteen of the 55 watches in the sale were originally purchased by Graves. The collection will travel to Geneva and Hong Kong before returning to New York June 9. (212.606.7000, www.sothebys.com)
