The Top 10 Toys of Summer: Under Pressure

The $79,000 Richard Mille RM 028 is an offshoot of the Swiss watchmaker’s RM 025 diver’s timepiece—a highly complicated tourbillon chronograph that, with its half-million-dollar-plus price tag, would make most wearers think twice before plunging into the water. The new watch should cause less hesitation, though it is by no means a strictly utilitarian tool. Mille employed for the RM 028 his well-tested, adjustable-mass automatic movement, which allows the wearer to set how frequently the rotor must be wound. But instead of adding the baroque levels of tourbillon engineering for which he is known, Mille focused his overactive imagination on the RM 028’s case, which provides extraordinary resistance to pressure: With 22 torque screws securing its three-part titanium case, the RM 028 can withstand depths of nearly 1,000 feet.
