Ulysse Nardin Ties Its Roots to the Future

One of the most head-turning watches at this year’s BaselWorld international watch fair was not a highly complicated superwatch, but a carefully considered production piece from Ulysse Nardin. On the exterior, the new Marine Chronometer Manufacture is a tribute to the company’s roots as a maker of ships’ chronometers, which is evident in the layout of the Grand Feu enamel dial. The new UN-118 caliber inside the watch, on the other hand, is a product of all the new materials research the company has pioneered over the last decade. The escapement is made with the company’s patented DIAMonSil fusion of synthetic diamond and silicium. The balance is a high-inertia configuration on a silicium hairspring. A limited edition of 350 will be made in gold ($36,800). Other versions combine gold and titanium and steel and titanium. (561.988.8600, www.ulysse-nardin.ch)
