The Best of the Best 2003: Hotels – Hermitage Hotel

Nashville, Tenn., long renowned for country music and the Grand Ole Opry, has never enjoyed a comparable reputation for world-class lodging. This perception could change with the recently reopened Hermitage Hotel. Located opposite the State Capitol, the hotel was the city’s grandest when it originally opened in 1910. It hosted the National American Woman Suffrage Association in 1914, as well as six presidents, including William Taft and Richard Nixon.

Now, after a $17 million, 10-month restoration, which painstakingly maintained the original Beaux Arts architecture, the hotel again stands as the city’s finest. In addition to new guest rooms—each with a Jacuzzi—the hotel now offers a 1,500-square-foot presidential suite and three executive suites. Fine linens and down-filled duvets assure a sound slumber. The bathrooms’ marble soaking tubs, double vanities, and separate showers are pure luxury. A gym and massage treatment rooms are new, but if a perfect martini is more to your liking, visit the refurbished Oak Bar. As clubby as ever, it remains the best in Nashville.
