The Best of the Best 2003: International Golf Resorts – Kauri Cliffs

New York financier Julian Robertson and his wife, Josie, traveled a long way from home to create a top-notch golfer’s retreat. Three years ago, they purchased a 5,000-acre parcel of land on the northern tip of New Zealand and transformed it into Kauri Cliffs, a handsome plantation-style golf lodge overlooking the Cavalli Islands.

American David Harman designed the course, which is draped atop dramatic seaside cliffs overlooking the sparkling Pacific. Comparisons to Pebble Beach are common, and Pebble often loses.

The property’s large central lodge, furnished with beautiful Maori artifacts and antiques, resembles a Carolina plantation house. There, chef Paul Jobin creates wonders with the local lamb, beef, and seafood, which are complemented by some of the island nation’s award-winning wines. Guests stay in one of the eight outlying cottages, each of which houses two suites.
