BEST of the BEST 2014 | Journeys | Resorts: L’Apogée Courchevel

Opened in December, L’Apogée Courchevel (+, www.lapogeecourchevel.com) represents a new high point in the Oetker Collection. The ski-in/ski-out chalet in the tony French village of Courchevel 1850 sits at the top, or apogee, of a former Olympic ski jump, affording some of the region’s most breathtaking Alpine views. But the 55-room retreat, which joins such elite Oetker properties as Le Bristol in Paris and Frégate Island Private in the Seychelles, impresses for more than its altitude. Inside, warm interiors blend such traditional Alpine details as carved wood-beam ceilings and plaid carpeting with art deco accents that include barrel-backed velvet chairs and Fior di Bosco marble floors. The resort’s Franck Ferigutti–helmed Le Comptoir is a worthy complement to Courchevel’s many Michelin-rated restaurants, mixing haute French cuisine with hearty mountain fare. An in-house ski shop prepares guests for the slopes (accessed via the resort’s private ski lift), while après-ski respite can be found in the Sisley Paris spa and wood-paneled Champagne Lounge. ($1,200–$6,900)
