BEST of the BEST 2014 | Journeys | Resorts: Singita Castleton

Since 1993, when Singita debuted its first lodge in the Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, the luxury safari brand has become the authority on refined African retreats. The six-cottage Singita Castleton (+27.21.683.3424, www.singita.com), which opened in October as the South Africa–based company’s third camp in Sabi Sand, is its most exclusive lodge to date. First constructed in 1971 as the private safari retreat of James Fawcett Bailes (the grandfather of Singita’s owner, Luke Bailes), the renovated camp is available to one party at a time—a maximum of just 12 guests—and offers a main lodge, a swimming pool, a tennis court, a fitness center, and a wine cellar. The design firm Cécile and Boyd’s infused the family retreat with appropriately nostalgic details that include framed botanical prints and colonial-era furniture. Also capturing the spirit of the old Bailes homestead are Castleton’s private guide, tracker, and game-drive vehicle, which allow guests total seclusion—save for big game—among Sabi Sand’s 45,000 private acres. (From $6,885 per night for eight guests).
