For more than a decade, Begawan Giri (begawan-giri.com) has reigned as one of Bali’s best resorts, with its sublime Balinese architecture, sweeping Ayung River Valley views, and jungle spa pools. Now Como Hotels, of Parrot Cay fame, has transformed this gem into its flagship destination spa, one that promotes holistic health. The original Begawan architect, Cheong Yew Kuan, designed the new facilities at Como Shambhala Estate at Begawan Giri. A recent expansion includes five new villas, a spa with nine treatment rooms, an outdoor hydrotherapy area, swimming pools, a yoga room, a Pilates studio, and a fully equipped gym. . . .
While in Palm Beach for a boat show in March, we revisited The Breakers (thebreakers.com), which since 1990 has poured about $225 million into a massive revitalization and expansion effort. Two weeks prior, this sprawling, 560-room resort that recalls the magnificent Italian villas of the 1400s had completed a $15 million beach complex featuring 20 bungalows that provide a host of oceanside amenities. Designed in the Old Florida cottage style, each bungalow features a sitting room, changing room, bathroom, and open-sky shower and includes a flat-screen TV, Wi-Fi access, and concierge service. Arranged around an “active” (read: children’s) pool and a quieter one, these cabanas are available on a per-day basis only, beginning at about $180 in summer and $735 in the high season.
