Gora Kadan

As with the resort town of Hakone, Japan, water is central to the experience at Gora Kadan, where guests are never more than a few steps from a bath or pool. Several of the resort’s 23 guest rooms and suites have cypress tubs large enough to float in. From the comfort of one of the hot springs on-site, guests enjoy views of traditional Japanese gardens and of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Accommodations Fourteen apartments and 23 guest rooms and suites, some with glassed-in porches, huge sitting rooms, and bedrooms decorated in traditional Japanese style, with tatami-matted floors. Recreation Soak in the onsen, Hakone’s natural hot springs, then relax in Gora Kadan’s spa. Golfing, hiking, fishing, and skiing all are within close range. Dining Elaborate, kaiseki-style (multicourse) meals. Worthy Diversion Take an aerial tram to the Great Boiling Valley, a site famous for its volcanic activity, sulfur vents, and kuro-tamago (black eggs). Rates Rooms and suites (including breakfast and dinner) begin at about $850 and $1,225, respectively.
