Grand Openings: All in the Family

What do you do when your 19th-century Heidelberg villa is too big for your family? You make it even bigger and turn it into the German university town’s first luxury boutique hotel. Owner Peter Huetter and his brother-in-law, Italian architect and interior designer Michele Bonan, spent five years expanding and transforming Huetter’s villa before opening Heidelberg Suites—a 26-suite hotel with views of Heidelberg Castle and the Old Bridge—in January.

Bonan, who designed the J.K. Place hotels in Florence and Capri in Italy, envisioned an intimate hotel that would reinvent German Romanticism. A cool, neutral color palette, clean-lined furniture, classical sculptures, and framed silhouettes of German authors make the suites feel, not surprisingly, like part of a comfortable family home. The contemporary furnishings, created by Bonan, are different in each room (and available for purchase).

With separate living and sleeping areas, a spacious bathroom, and a pantry kitchen, Heidelberg Suites’ accommodations are big—but not too big. They are just right. Heidelberg Suites, +49.6221.655.650, www.heidelbergsuites.com ($360–$820)
