Grand Openings: Rising Sun

The Pamushana safari lodge in southeastern Zimbabwe has been one of Africa’s best lookouts for spotting big game since the camp opened in 1998. Now, Pamushana—which means “place of sunshine” in the local Shangaan language—shines from the inside as well, thanks to a yearlong renovation led by the South Africa–based safari-lodge operator Singita.

Situated on 130,000 acres in the Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, the new Singita Pamushana Lodge opened in September with a yoga studio, a bar, expanded dining areas, and wireless Internet service, among other amenities. Cécile & Boyd’s—the Cape Town firm that designed the original Pamushana, as well as Singita’s camps in Tanzania and South Africa—replaced khaki decor with a palette of orange and rust that complements the Malilangwe landscape.

In addition to a main lodge, Pamushana includes six stand-alone suites and a five-bedroom villa that overlooks Malilangwe Lake. Plunge pools and fireplaces offer homelike comforts, but guests will feel equally comfortable in the care of Pamushana’s expert guides, who lead twice-daily big-game drives throughout the reserve.
