The Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur

Contemporary design meets royal Rajasthan at the Leela Palace Kempinski Udaipur, an 80-room resort on the banks of northwestern India’s Lake Pichola. Opened in October, the Leela affords views of the lake (and of the marble-walled Taj Lake Palace hotel in the middle of it) from every room. Corbel arches and grand domes accent the hotel’s exterior, while interiors feature rich yellow and vermilion brocade fabrics, thekri mirror work, and miniature watercolor paintings that depict Indian fables. In the guest rooms, glass-enclosed soaking tubs and clean-lined furnishings modernize the otherwise regal ambience.

The Leela plans to debut an Espa facility—with a mix of rooms and tents for treatments—before the end of this year. In the meantime, guests can seek therapy in the form of cocktails and casual fare at the Dining Room, where canopied patio tables face a mosaic-tiled pond and overlook the City Palace, the residence of Udaipur’s Maharana.
