Great Escapes July 2013

Le Marche, Italy

Most visitors to central Italy stay in Tuscany and Umbria, but those who prefer the road less traveled may find Le Marche more to their liking. Near the hill town of Treia, Le Marche’s Casa Olivi delivers provincial authenticity with cutting-edge style. The 300-year-old farmhouse recently underwent a four-year restoration by the Swiss architects Markus Wespi and Jérôme de Meuron, and the stone walls of the three-story home now contain four bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, a kitchen, a theater, and a gym. Outside lie an infinity pool, an outdoor kitchen, and a guesthouse. The house manager can arrange wine tastings a casa or outings to local restaurants, several of which possess Michelin stars. Mediterranean Sea

Kirk Lazarus, the South African entrepreneur behind the Molori resorts in Africa and Australia, also placed his design signature on the brand’s 145-foot yacht Told U So, which launched in 2011. “I designed it around my own needs,” he says, “for cold and hot weather, rain and sunshine, so each guest can enjoy it without being on top of each other.” Indeed, the Benetti-built beauty is outfitted with well-considered details: The skylounge converts to a cinema, an indoor dining area with retractable glass walls turns alfresco, and the owner’s suite includes a study, a screening room, a private terrace with a six-person Jacuzzi, and a steam room. The four other suites are individually styled (with the monikers White, Red, Caramel, and Ivory), and modern art coexists with antiques and Missoni fabrics throughout. The experienced crew of up to 12 includes a chef and a concierge, and charter guests can obtain PADI diving certification during their voyage. Told U So offers a full complement of water toys, and a 50-foot tender is available around the clock. [K.C.]

Jackson, Wyoming

Located on the East Gros Ventre Butte, across Jackson Hole from the Teton range, this Riva Ridge retreat for summer or winter sojourns is designed to evoke the rustic grandeur of the national-park lodges. The 13,721-square-foot main house was completed in 2012 and offers such mountain-lodge comforts as a massive double-sided rock fireplace shared by the great room and dining room, outdoor access to stone patios from every room on the ground floor, and views that overlook a trout pond, the mountains, and the property’s expansive 118 acres. Also in the main house: a professional recording studio, a gym, an indoor pool, media and billiard rooms, and a second-story library connected by a bridge to the family room. Besides the home’s five bedrooms—all with en suite baths—a 1,400-square-foot annex (accessible by a wine tunnel with tasting room) holds a suite for a nanny or an in-law. A 3,850-square-foot guesthouse offers an additional four bedrooms and bathrooms and expansive living areas. [K.C.]

St. Barts, French West Indies

At villa jade, the wooden bridge spanning a koi pond and the two Buddhas watching over the entrance make for a Zen-like aura, belying the fact that the property is perched over the Caribbean rather than the China Sea or the Sea of Japan. Yet just as Asian-French fusion works so well when it comes to cuisine, such a melding also succeeds for this East-meets-West layout of pavilions. The main villa and three cottages provide five en suite bedrooms plus additional bedrooms for children and staff, as well as a large living room, a covered outdoor dining area with seating for 20, an air-conditioned fitness room, a sauna, and a seven-seat cinema room replete with red Chinese lanterns. Most of the decorative pieces were specially commissioned, including the master bedroom’s wenge-wood bed, with its Hermès orange headboard created by Alexandre Mareuil, the French brand known for hand-sewn leather goods. A large terrace with an infinity pool, spa, and gazebo affords views of the secluded Marigot Beach during the day and is artfully illuminated at night. [K.C.]
