Hayman—the original private-island resort in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef region—was already scheduled for a renovation when two cyclones struck the property last January and February. The island, which first opened as a resort in 1950, was subsequently shuttered for the first time since it closed in the mid-1980s to be redeveloped as a luxury resort. Now Hayman has reopened once again, this time better than ever.

Among the upgrades and additions at Hayman, which began welcoming back guests in August, are eight new butler-serviced Beach Villas (pictured). Kerry Hill Architects, known for its work with Amanresorts and Alila Hotels & Resorts, designed the villas with swimming pools, large terraces, and outdoor showers that overlook the Coral Sea. The firm also designed the island’s hilltop and waterfront Hayman Residences, which are available for private ownership.

Each of Hayman’s 210 accommodations is either new or updated, but the island’s primary draws remain the same: the calm beaches and waters in the Whitsundays and the resort’s sprawling beachfront swimming pool. Among the property’s new services is pizza delivery by helicopter to guests spending the afternoon on nearby deserted islands. Hayman, +61.7.4940.1838, www.hayman.com.au
