L’and Vineyards

Speckled with vineyards, cork trees, and little else, Portugal’s Alentejo wine region recently welcomed an appropriately spartan resort. L’and Vineyards, which opened in April, is a sleek 22-suite retreat modeled loosely after a traditional Mediterranean village. Lisbon-based lawyer Jose Cunhal Sendim commissioned five architects to create the resort on his family’s farm, which is also home to a winery that offers tours and tastings daily.

In addition to the suites, Sendim’s estate includes a spa, a Mediterranean restaurant, gardens, and a main swimming pool. Several of the resort’s suites have their own gardens and plunge pools, as well as retractable ceilings for stargazing. The rooms’ pared-down design scheme emphasizes natural woods and simple furnishings, making them better suited to aesthetes than to all-out-luxury lovers. Preferences aside, it is difficult to imagine anyone not enjoying a glass of the local elixir by the outdoor fireplaces on the suites’ patios.

Between tastings, guests at L’and can venture to deserted Atlantic beaches to the west, to the UNESCO walled city of Evora to the east, and to Lisbon, located 45 minutes to the north. L’and Vineyards, +351.266.242.400, www.l-andvineyards.com
