Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai

Twenty years ago, the Pudong side of Shanghai was a bucolic patchwork of rice paddies. Today the district—located directly across the Huangpu River from the Bund—is a mass of futuristic skyscrapers jutting from the water’s edge. The new Mandarin Oriental Pudong, Shanghai, which opened in April, embraces the district’s contemporary style while offering the serenity of a simpler time.

Set within a striking new tower, the 362-room Mandarin Oriental shelters guests from the surrounding city with amenities that include a roughly 26,000-square-foot spa with a tepidarium and a crystal steam room for pre- or post-treatment relaxation. Equally calming are the subdued colors and contemporary furnishings in the guest rooms, which afford sweeping vistas of the Shanghai skyline. In the 25th-floor Presidential Suite, two rooftop garden terraces offer close-enough-to-touch views of Pudong’s Oriental Pearl Tower.

More than 4,000 commissioned artworks are on display throughout the Mandarin Oriental, from the lobby’s spectacular glass mosaic depicting an ancient forest to custom porcelain vases by the Chinese artist Lai De Quan. Modern touches also include an 80-foot indoor swimming pool, a Technogym fitness center, and a contemporary French restaurant helmed by the Michelin-starred chef Richard Ekkebus. For adventurous guests who wish to explore their Blade Runner-esque surroundings, the hotel’s fleet of Segways provides an apropos means of transportation.
