Sabi Sabi’s Earth Lodge Gets a New, Sustainable Style

Sabi Sabi’s South African game lodge Earth Lodge has been renovated in a style that celebrates its natural surroundings, both in style and by adding several new activities for its guests. The new design employs many local, natural materials like sisal and wood, as well as natural colors like raw ivory. Geoffrey Armstrong, longtime artist and designer for Earth Lodge, translated this theme into chandeliers composed of twigs and branches painted in metallic hues that hang throughout the resort, and the lodge is adorned with his functional objets d’art made from salvaged trees. Among Armstrong’s standout designs is a carved tree headboard, which took him seven months to create, that is in the Amber Presidential Suite. The carved tree appears to be growing from the head of the bed; its wrought limbs resemble flames extending to the ceiling.

At Earth Lodge’s new day bar, guests can watch wildlife while having lunch at stone-topped tables submerged in the pool. There are also open-vehicle safaris, and walking safaris, in addition to picnics, a spa, a library, an art gallery, a meditation garden, private outdoor dining, and an underground wine cellar with more than 6,000 bottles. Suites, each with a private plunge pool, start at $1,228 per person per night.  (+27.13.735.5261, www.sabisabi.com)
