The hardest hit of the Caribbean islands, Puerto Rico has an agonizingly slow road to recovery ahead. A majority of the island is still without power, with full service not expected for months. Meanwhile, the U.S. territory’s biggest luxury resorts—including St. Regis Bahia Beach; The Ritz-Carlton, San Juan; and Dorado Beach, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve—are still assessing the damage and determining reopening dates throughout 2018. W Retreat & Spa on Vieques Island is also closed until further notice. Some city properties, however, are operational, including La Concha, Condado Vanderbilt, and Hotel El Convento.
Various efforts are underway to help Puerto Rico get back on its feet. Chef José Andrés served more than 100,000 meals to displaced and hungry locals earlier this month, and the crowdsourcing site GoFundMe has created a hub for the island’s many relief funds. The best way to help this ravaged territory is to visit United for Puerto Rico’s website.
