With its debut last May in the capital city’s buzzing business district, the Mandarin Oriental, Taipei (mandarinoriental.com), introduced a new standard for hotels in Taiwan. The 303-room property is a blend of Asian and European styles where nearly everything—from the calf-leather headboards in the guest rooms to the 3,000-pound crystal chandelier in the lobby—was made by hand. A spa by the design firm Yabu Pushelberg offers therapies combining Eastern and Western techniques, and six restaurants include the Italian venue Bencotto by the Michelin-rated chef Mario Cittadini. For a front-row view of Taipei’s bustling hub, the Club City Suite pairs foie gras canapés with a panoramic vista that spans the Taipei 101 skyscraper.
