Set within a row of 17th- and 18th-century canal houses along the Herengracht canal, the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam (waldorfastoria.com) is right in line with its historic setting. The 93-room hotel, which debuted in May, embraces its Golden Age provenance with meticulously restored gabled facades, blue-and-white Delft tiles, and trompe l’oeil paintings by the Dutch artist Jacob Maurer. More modern in style are the hotel’s Guerlain Spa and indoor swimming pool, as well as its guest rooms, which are adorned with whitewashed rafters and bright details in ochre and peacock blue. Corks are popped and glasses filled at the Vault Bar (set within a former bank and decorated with original safe-deposit boxes), while fine dining is the focus at the Librije’s Zusje Amsterdam, a spin-off of the Michelin-rated De Librije in nearby Zwolle.
