This nine-island archipelago in the Sea of Marmara may just be an hour by steamer ship from bustling Istanbul, but it feels a world away. A place of exile during the Byzantine era (4th through 15th centuries), the islands are now popular for day trips and also ideal for longer stints of unplugging. With no gasoline-powered vehicles, the islands are perfectly quiet, aside from an occasional whir of an electric bike, click-clack of a horse’s hoof, or song of a bird. For now, check in to the Splendid Palace hotel, the archipelago’s Victorian grand dame, which has been in operation for 110 years. A new property from Viceroy will bring in a more modern sense of luxury to the frozen-in-time-feeling region when it opens later this year.
