One of Kenya’s best camps in one of its most popular locations, andBeyond Kichwa Tembo recently completed a significant revamp.
Why Go: Located directly in the path of the Great Migration, Kenya’s andBeyond Kichwa Tembo is typically at high occupancy during July and October, when multitudes of wildebeest and zebra thunder over the Masai Mara National Reserve. People travel from across the world to witness the annual event, and you can imagine the crowds. The camp is located adjacent to the remote western corner of the reserve, where the Kichwa Tembo private concession hosts at most 80 guests in 40 tents (from $380 per person). The place is marvelous year-round, but this past season the camp closed from October to July for a major overhaul.
What to Expect: The new public spaces at the camp are clean and contemporary, maximizing views over the Mara. Floor-to-ceiling curtains pull back and the Mara calls all of the attention from various split-level platforms. Some of the guest tents have been elevated for better views, and all received upgraded furnishings, decor, and bathrooms. The camp’s three-part swimming pool that seemingly hangs out over the Mara is still prime for wildlife viewing, as is the unique offering of safari by hot-air balloon.
How to Get There: Guests can fly in daily from Nairobi or Mombasa. From Kichwa Tembo’s private airstrip, the 30-minute drive to camp allows for game viewing. (+27.11.809.4300, www.andbeyond.com)
