Maui welcomes the Montage Kapalua Bay to its premier luxury development.
Why Go: The 22,000-acre Kapalua development in the northwest corner of Maui encompasses two golf courses, three beaches, a Ritz-Carlton resort, and several residential communities. The 20-acre complex Residences at Kapalua Bay opened with the area’s largest condo residences in 2009, just in time for the Great Recession. In 2013 the underperforming property’s latest owners hired the renowned Montage Hotels and Resorts to manage it. Since renovations began in the fall, new restaurants, new room designs, a 30,000-square-foot Spa Montage, and new service standards have been put into place in advance of next month’s reopening.
What to Expect: Fifty unsold Kapalua Bay fractional units were converted into Montage’s 50-suite hotel. Thus, the accommodations (from $795) all include a living room, a kitchen, and a laundry room. The new Cane and Canoe restaurant is located under the lobby and features a modern Hawaiian menu, and the more casual Sunset Patio also serves three meals daily. The resort manager, David Hoffman, came over from the Montage Beverly Hills to manage the new resort, where the three-tier Sunset Pool is a destination in and of itself. The oceanfront resort boasts direct access to Kapalua Bay Beach, one of Maui’s best.
How to Get There: The resort is about an hour’s drive from Maui’s international airport and 10 minutes from the local Kapalua Airport. (808.662.6600, www.montagehotels.com/kapaluabay)
