The Top 100 Hotels 2015 Europe: Hotel Sacher Wien...

Vienna, Austria

Sacher torte—an airy chocolate cake layered with apricot jam and served with a spoonful of whipped cream on the side—has been on the menu at Hotel Sacher Wien since the Sacher family opened the hotel on Philharmonikerstrasse in 1876. Nearly a century and a half later, the decadent confection and its historic home remain two of Vienna’s greatest indulgences. The 149-room hotel is a beguiling spectacle of fin-de-siècle artistry, with its brocade wall coverings, silk curtains, glittering Lobmeyr chandeliers, and original oil paintings. Plush and vibrant in emerald green, the Restaurant Anna Sacher is delightfully antiquated with white-glove service and dark-wood-paneled walls. A glass conservatory at the scarlet-hued Restaurant Rote Bar overlooks the Vienna State Opera across the street. In the Sacher Spa, guests are treated to therapies that incorporate appropriately delectable ingredients: caviar, coconut, and, of course, chocolate. ($580–$2,925) sacher.com
