Even at its 50-guest capacity, Calivigny Island never lacks for living space. The 80-acre island just south of Grenada was purchased in 2000 by a French businessman and his wife, who subsequently built a sprawling residential compound complete with a 10-bedroom, 107,600-square-foot main house. The couple added on to a second mansion, the nine-bedroom Overhang Residence, last year, when Calivigny became available as a rental on a buy-out-only basis.
The private island’s extravagant accommodations—which also include three two-bedroom Calivigny Cottages completed this year—are bordered by clusters of palm trees, plumeria, orchids, and native grasses. The main house and Overhang (so named for its location at the water’s edge, underneath Iguana Hill) are a short walk from each other, while the cottages are a three-minute ATV ride away. Also accessible by ATV are the island’s many ungroomed, out-of-the-way beaches, which offer ample empty sand for every visitor.
No matter where you venture on the island, you can summon Calivigny’s staff to deliver food and drink orders 24 hours a day. Both an Italian chef and a sushi chef are available to prepare picnic lunches for beach and boat excursions, or formal meals back at your mansion.
ACCESS Five minutes by boat from Grenada; Calivigny’s dock can accommodate yachts up to 175 feet.
